Reaching the Gateway

I started my journey from Kohima. I stayed in a camp in Kisama village, where the Hornbill Festival happens. Kisama is about 12 km from Kohima. From there, I took a shared taxi with some new friends. We were all travelers heading in different directions. After a 15 km drive, we left the main road. The real adventure began! The rough, unpaved path was perfect for off-roading. After half an hour, we reached the trek starting point.
The Trek Begins

The climb was steep. It took about 1 to 1.5 hours to complete the major uphill part. Because of the Hornbill Festival, many people were trekking. It felt like a community walk! But the first viewpoint made it all worth it.
Wait, wait! This is not Zukou Valley yet. There is still a long way to go. After the steep climb, we crossed big rocks. Then came a narrow path through thick green bushes. From far, you won’t even see the path. It looks like you are walking inside the hills. The sun was shining, and the wind was fresh. Everyone became quiet, lost in the beauty of nature.
Crossing the Curvy Hills

The trail took 2-3 hours. We crossed many curvy green hills. The view was stunning. Finally, we saw our campsite. We rested, ate, and got ready for the final trek. But it was late. By 3:30 PM, we started again, but the sunset was at 4:30 PM. We could not reach the last point. It was already dark. Some friends even returned halfway. But we decided to try again in the morning.
Camping in the Clouds

The night was freezing! The temperature dropped to -8 degrees Celsius. But the sky was full of stars. We sat around the bonfire, shared stories, and enjoyed the moment. But dinner time was tough. The line was long, and everyone was hungry. This is the downside of coming during Hornbill. But the upside? I will tell you soon!
The Final Trek to Zukou Valley

The next morning, we started early. Everything was frozen. The rivers, the grass, and even the tents had frost. As the sun rose, the valley shined like a crystal land. We walked towards the last point. The hills looked like an artist’s masterpiece. But who is a better artist than nature, right?
The Story Behind the Name ‘Zukou’
The Angami tribe first found this valley. They were happy but also scared. They had never seen such a place. In their language, Zukou means “cold.” That’s how this valley got its name.
Meeting the Angami Tribe
The Angami tribe is one of Nagaland’s major tribes. They are strong and proud of their traditions. They live close to nature. Their hospitality is heartwarming. They speak the Naga Angami tribe language. I learned a few words but still needed help understanding them. But their kindness spoke louder than words.
Fun in the Frozen River

One of the best parts? Playing on the frozen river! I had never seen a frozen river before. My guide, Roko, and I became kids again, slipping and laughing. It was pure joy!
A Cultural Stop at Kisama Heritage Village
After returning, I visited Kisama Heritage Village. It is a beautiful place that showcases the tribal culture of Nagaland. Traditional huts, historical artifacts, and cultural performances make it worth a visit.
Hornbill Festival – A Grand Celebration

Hornbill Festival is the biggest cultural event in Nagaland. Every tribe comes together to showcase their dance, music, and food. The energy is unbelievable. If you visit in December, don’t miss it.
Flora and Fauna of Zukou Valley
Zukou Valley is home to unique plants and animals. The rare Dzukou lily grows only here. The valley also has orchids, birds, and small wild animals. If you love nature, this place will amaze you.
