Superhero #1: Chanphua Wangsu – The Book Whisperer

Chanphua Wangsu - Teacher
Chanphua Wangsu – Teacher

You’re in Longding district, Imagine a place where a place where basic infrastructure is a dream. Now, meet Chanphua Wangsu, a local who saw the thirst for knowledge amongst the students but noticed many dropping out due to financial constraints. What did our superhero do? He ditched the traditional classroom and started free tuitions for Class 11 and 12 students right outside his own house, in a small bamboo shack! But Chanphua’s vision was bigger. He fought the authorities, secured a neglected government room, and transformed it into a beautiful library – a haven for students with free books, guidance, and the perfect study environment. Talk about dedication!

Meeting Chanphua was inspiring. He’s this super kind guy, his eyes twinkling with the dream of seeing his students crack competitive exams and become officers, teachers, and leaders who can truly develop their region. He’s a true champion for education, and let me tell you, the students absolutely adore him. They told me, “He gave us charity tuition and is very helpful to us. He started this library with a big vision – for people from his area to become successful and contribute to the tribe’s progress.” Now, that’s a superhero in action!

Superhero #2: Julai Chingsaham – The Craft Queen of Wancho Tribe

Chujai, another amazing soul from Longding, is all about women empowerment and keeping the beautiful Wancho handicrafts alive. Forget the damsel-in-distress stereotype! Chujai runs a self-help brew (think a super cool women’s group) where they create stunning local handicrafts – Kotong (fabric bags), traditional tops and coats, and gorgeous bead jewelry. Their designs are inspired by the Wancho tribe tattoos, especially the rhombus patterns, reflecting their tribe’s unique identity.

Chujai explained, “We Wancho tribe women are skilled in handicrafts, weaving, and art. It’s a part of our culture, passed down for generations. But due to lack of recognition, many girls feel inferior and leave for jobs in urban areas. This breaks my heart.” Chujai and her team are changing that. They’re not just running a business; they’re also offering a homestay to raise funds and keep things going. Check out the description box for their links – you gotta see their incredible work!

Superhero #3: Khuntik Paul Khusia – The Culture Crusader

Now, let’s zoom over to the remote Tutsa tribe territory and meet Pauling Kusiya – a multi-talented, fun-loving guy on a mission to put his little-known tribe on the map. How’s he doing this? By organizing traditional festivals, creating a detailed website about his culture, and even documenting local folk tales and language in the form of books. Pauling is all about spreading awareness and preserving his heritage.

I met Pauling, and let me tell you, his enthusiasm is contagious! He’s this jack-of-all-trades, promoting tourism through festivals, sharing his culture online, and even becoming a storyteller and language protector. He wants the world to know about the Tutsa people, their traditions, and their vibrant way of life.

These are just three of the many superheroes I met in the Patkai Hills. Each one with a unique story, a burning passion, and a relentless drive to make a difference. They’re not just changing their communities; they’re inspiring others to dream big and fight for a brighter future.

The Patkai Hills are still relatively off the beaten track, so a little extra planning is essential. Here are some tips:

  • Getting There: It’s best to fly into Dibrugarh Airport in Assam and then take a taxi or bus to Longding or Tezu, the main towns in the region.
  • Permits: You’ll need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh. This can be obtained online or from designated offices.
  • Accommodation: Homestays are a great way to experience local culture and support the community. However, there are also a few hotels in Longding and Tezu.
  • Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit the Patkai Hills is between October and April, when the weather is pleasant and dry. During monsoon season (May-September), landslides can occur, making travel difficult.
